I’m working on a project using Rigid 10k resin and I’m looking for recommendations on the best thread inserts to use. Ideally, I’d like to avoid pre-tapping if possible. I have access to Helicoil, Spredsert, Quicksert, and Ensat inserts. If needed, I can also purchase other types of inserts. The required thread size is M6. Pre-tapping should be avoided because threading in this material is difficult and the parts are hard to clamp in a vise. Any suggestions or experiences would be greatly appreciated!
I would recommend Helicoil, and if you’d like to avoid pre-tapping, you would have to model in the outer threads for the Helicoil insert, which may take a few test prints to find the best clearance/offset to get it to fit well without tapping. Same should work for Quicksert and Ensat, but the only reason I would not recommend Spreadsert is that Rigid 10K is extremely stiff, but also means that it’s brittle. It’ll probably still be fine for a chunky part, but it’s just not good practice. I would only recommend Spredsert for ductile materials like Durable and Tough 1500. Good luck!
you Could glue in some inserts we sometimes have to glue in heat sets for MJF Parts because the hole was a bit to wide I have done it with Formlabs materials as well
thanks. I will insert a 3D model of a helicoil into my parts and then remove it again. A test print with different offsets should help to find the best dimensions with which I only have to minimally recut the threads. I will test the same with Qicksert
After a few tests, I realized that it is not necessary to model the threads for Quicksert inserts.
For M6, it is sufficient to drill (or print) a 9.2 mm diameter hole and add a 10.5 mm chamfer at the top. The Quicksert is easy to screw in (it generated a torque of 7.7 Nm on our semi-automatic machine).
I also tested overtightening the screws (stainless steel screw with 12Nm) and nothing happened
when I used M6x6 helicoils, the material broke over a large area right at the bottom edge of the helicoil even at a very low torque. with longer helicoils it got better, but not nearly as good as with the Quickserts.
