STL always on build platform

Hi,
Every time I open an STL file in PreForm, It is placed directly on the build platform**. I can move it in x and y, but not in z.** I can adjust the orientation of the part using the adjusters but I can “lift” the part up off the build platform. Am I doing something wrong or is this how it is meant to be?

The only way you can move the part on Z axis is by going into “Supports”, open the “Advanced Settings” and change the dimension in the “Height Above Raft”.
