I’ve been pretty successful at getting accuracy on the side opposite the supports, so I orient the part this way.
However, I have detail on both sides, so it’s just not possible to put the supports where there is little detail.
Is it possible to specify a smaller support size for some supports and larger ones in others?
Yes, it’s possible to specify the size for every support point before setting the support. Use the Edit-mode to set the supports manually.

That’s definitely something you have to consider, in some cases you can split up the mesh so that you can then orient the resulting parts in a way that the important detail is facing more upwards and doesn’t have supports on areas you can’t clean.
