Hi everyone,
I’ve just watched FauxHammer’s Form Studio 1 review, and it has left me a little worried that I made the wrong choice buying a Form 4 primarily for printing miniatures.
Studio 1 seems much more directly aimed at this use case, especially with Alpha Model Resin and the new surface smoothing demonstrated in the review. My concern is that improvements which could help me get better miniature prints might now be reserved for Studio 1, even where they could also benefit existing Form 4 owners.
Here’s the review:
Could someone from Formlabs clarify the following?
-
Will the miniature-focused software improvements also come to Form 4? In particular, I’m interested in the new “anti-aliasing supersampling” described by FauxHammer, which compares neighbouring layers to smooth surfaces while preserving sharp details. I understand Form 4 already has anti-aliasing; I’m asking specifically about this newer algorithm.
-
Will Alpha Model Resin be supported on Form 4? It seems particularly suited to detailed miniatures, not to mention that it is considerably cheaper than the standard resins currently available for Form 4. I’d love to know whether existing Form 4 owners will also be able to use it.
-
Could Form 4 receive an official higher-resolution LCD/LPU upgrade in the future? Both printers have the same stated XY build area, but Studio 1 uses 35 µm pixels compared with Form 4’s 50 µm. I’m not assuming the modules are interchangeable, but would a supported upgrade be technically feasible, or are there fundamental hardware differences that prevent it?
-
Could the new tank-film technology and Release Texture V2 also be introduced for Form 4? Formlabs describes these as reducing peel forces and potentially allowing fewer supports, which sounds particularly useful for delicate miniatures. I’m not asking whether the existing Studio 1 tank fits Form 4, but whether these improvements could be incorporated into future Form 4 tanks or a supported hardware upgrade.
More broadly, will Form 4 continue to receive improvements relevant to miniature printing, or will development for this use case mainly focus on Studio 1?
Thanks!
