I had discovered this and discussed it on another thread but I think it deserves its own as a bug.
I am currently transitioning from Nylon 12 GF to Nylon 12 and running all the temperature tests and calibrations.
I had to dial my Fuse 1+ down to around a -1.75c or -1.5c so I ran three X/Y prints
First one was in the Default v4.1 setting
Second was with a -1.75c chamber offset and the recommended Speed Optimized v4.1 setting
Third was with a -1.5c chamber offset and the recommended Speed Optimized v4.1 setting
You can see that both the Speed Optimized v5.1 set prints had “streaking” on identical locations on the bottom of the part running opposite the roller along the Y axis.
At first I thought this was mechanical or a lower chamber temp so I bumped up to the -1.5c chamber and tried again.
What is crazy… and mad I did not get it on video… was I watched the “streaks” actually print like a bar code on layer 186 before the actual part started on layer 187.
I thought this may be a flaw on the actual X/Y calibration print so I looked in PreForm but it is not there.
So this is obviously happening in the PreForm slice or is a flaw with the Speed Optimization v5.1 setting.
To add to that… I have never run the v5.1 Speed Optimization setting and this is my first week running Nylon 12 so the “outlining of each part” and these different settings are new to me as they don’t perform this with Nylon 12 GF…but what I also found strange and “new” was on this v5.1 setting I watched what looked to be random “perimeter lasering” around the edges of the build chamber?
Before the X/Y part level/layer building up to it… I would see a quick laser along the back edge of build chamber…couple layers later along the left edge… then the right… etc… is this something to help strengthen the powder bed along the chamber walls? I assume it is intentional…
Thank you for being active in our forum and for sharing valuable details about your experience, regarding the X/Y calibrations in combination with the new v5.1 speed optimized settings. My name is Shiden, and I work at Formlabs as an Innovation Manager. This is valuable information for us that we take serious.
I will reach out to our PreForm team and share your feedback with them to get their insights on this issue. I will follow up with you once I have more information.
Just to keep everyone interested in the loop and for general knowledge, Formlabs support has requested to “come here on site, to run some tests on this Fuse 1+ and to make any adjustments needed”.
They also suggested if I continue to want to print on it, to run the Default v4.1 for Nylon 12 instead of the Speed Optimization v5.1 that everyone has suggested.
This printer has run perfectly for the past year with Nylon 12 GF so not sure what in the hardware would need an onsite visit… my gut is telling me this is a Software/Firmware issue with v5.1 Speed Optimization in regards to the actual X/Y calibration print but I would think that some others out there would have ran a X/Y with v5.1 and saw this same thing… so who knows…
I have parts and jobs that need run this week regardless so I will run a chamber and see what happens.
FYI… I did order a BLAST this week so will let ya all know how that goes.
Regardless of those weird streaking artifacts added to both the X/Y calibration prints, I just ran some test parts with the Speed Optimization v5.1 and I am about to post process to see how they turned out.
I did film this “chamber wall perimeter lasering” I was talking about that I never saw until running v5.1.
Can’t get an answer yet from Formlabs, other than them wanting to fly a rep in to look at the machine, but can someone running Nylon 12 with the v5.1 speed optimization setting please confirm this is safe and normal…something you are seeing as well?
You can see a faint laser along the lower chamber wall wrapping up around the sides on occasional layers before the main print.
I imagine it is something meant to help the chamber walls…but it’s only on one side of the chamber. in this print from what I saw. During the X/Y calibration prints it would alternate sides of the chamber and seemed to only do it every other layer and it would do this well before the X/Y print would even start.
Update - supposedly this bar/stripe on the parts issue was fixed and just released yesterday in the PreForm 3.41.1 update that “resolved an issue with Nylon 12 v5.1 Speed Optimization settings where some laser paths were out of order, leading to defects with some users.”
I will have to try this again now with v5.1 and a X/Y calibration print…but if you are following my other “Burr” thread… right now I am only getting good parts out of the original “Legacy” setting.
Still don’t know if the chamber wall lasering is normal on v5.1…
