Saving $500+ a year on IPA - My Recycling Experience

Resin prints/components are s a core part of my business making motorcycle accessories. I love the strength of Formlabs resins, the quality of the prints, and the speed I get on the Form 4 compared to other additive manufacturing methods.

However what I haven’t liked about resin printing over the last 5+ years is dealing with dirty IPA. My wash gets saturated too quickly too often and the turnaround time for my IPA supplier is 3-4 weeks for the quantity I order. I also need a secondary clean IPA container on hand to rinse the Tough series prints for a clean, matte surface finish (for painting with Cerakote). Lastly disposing of IPA is a chore, as most services that pick up used solvents require a minimum quantity that I just don’t have at the moment. As an aside, I have used some cellulose filters in the past to cycle through the pigments in my washes, which helps with clarity but doesn’t completely reduce saturation. IPA really has been the sore subject in my manufacturing process… until I met a guy named Phil.

Phil (@leonhart88) from Ember Prototypes shared his experience a while ago with solvent recycling (using a Uniram URS500). I had never heard of this process, but essentially it vaporizes a solvent by boiling and leaves the contaminants behind. Leaving you with a separated clean, pure IPA in a catch container, and the residue inside a thermal resistant ‘trash bag’. The returned IPA is a little lower each time you recycle, as any air trapped in the vat gets condensed as well and deposited in your container, however it’s relatively marginal and the resulting IPA is a few percentages lower than whatever you put in it.

The main issue with this process, is the cost of the equipment. There are some distilled options others have used from less expensive amazon wine distillers, however I personally do not want the risk associated with using it. A brand new Uniram 500 (5 gallon capacity) costs $5k brand new. I could not economically warrant that much money as I’m not going through that much IPA at the moment. HOWEVER…

For months I continued to search for used units, most of which ran $2-3.5k and were NOT well maintained or cleaned per the manufacturers instructions. Recently I came upon a Facebook post for a BRAND NEW unit…for $1250 USD. I could not pass that up - so I messaged the seller and picked it up a few days ago.

I’ve run all of my dirty IPA through it in 3 batches, about 12 gallons. Because I can’t dispose of IPA in my area, I had to save everything and just store it. Well now that I have this unit, it’s already reprocessed about $300 of IPA that I DON’T have to buy. I will have to replenish what I have on hand, as there is some evaporation during the recycling (manufacturer states 1/8gal per cycle), but this will significantly cut down my IPA costs and I will likely start processing parts more often now that I don’t have to wait around for fresh IPA restocking. At the cost I paid for the unit, it should pay for itself well within a year. Each cycle takes about 4-6 hours depending on how much IPA is poured in. There is some residual IPA left over in the tank - the condensed vapors creep in behind the bag, so there is a little bit of cleanup when the bag is removed, however it’s clean IPA so not a terrible clean up job.

As of right now, we are currently recycling about 80-85% of our IPA by setting the dirty IPA into clear containers, curing it, and then we let those containers sit for a couple days while everything eventually makes it’s way to the bottom of the container. From there, I pump the clean IPA back out from the top and when the pump gets close enough to start sucking up resin, I stop the pump. The remaining dirty IPA gets left to evaporate, and I have goopy resin dust at the bottom of our container when it’s all said and done. This gets tossed in the regular trash after being sealed

It works pretty well for us at the rate we are using it, but I might look into one of these machines in the future as it would probably save us on labor hours in the long run. Also seems to be a good bit more efficient

Savings from recycling IPA is not to be underestimated. Everyone I talk about it with in my industry is surprised to learn that we save $2k/year just by recycling IPA

Also shameless plug for a long interview I had with a material scientist friend who explains why setting in the sun, curing and/or attempting to filter doesn’t really work (at least not in the same way as distilling).

We at the current rate use around 200 lt of IPA per year which cost around $500 USD. It will take 2000 Lt to make sense to start recycling. However all the waste IPA is currently stored, I saw a bag from Phrozen 3d priced at $45 maybe worth the try.

I’d like to see how this actually works out in practice, because I can feel a significant improvement in cleaning with dirty/semi-dirty IPA and freshly “recycled” IPA. You’re right, it’s never as good or as efficient as clean IPA but it is capable of being re-used once or twice with seemingly great results.

Does anyone know of a lab I can send out some “recycled” IPA to and get some deep dives into what exactly has been left over?

I also do the budget “cure in the sun” cleaning of my IPA. Sure it doesn’t work as well as distillation, but that’s a too expensive/dangerous process for me at the moment.

For the really basic resins it works great. But for things like the tough and flexible resins it just doesn’t get everything out.

Presumably it’s just the parts of the resin you use that don’t actually cure – the components that get stuck in suspension, in cured resin. These are usually the ingredients that make the cured items flexible or durable.

I hear ya, had I not come across this unit, I wouldn’t have gotten it. I’ve been searching for quite a while!

It’s because there are two main mechanisms for cleaning resin - mechanical agitation + chemical solubility. Setting in the sun, filtering, etc. remove cured/partially cured monomers & oligemers, dyes, pigments, etc. which then improve the cleaning power of mechanical agitation…but you can never refresh the saturation/solubility power of IPA without distilling it. This is why fresh IPA has basically “double” the cleaning power. It gets complicated, but that’s the gist.

That’s awesome! I’m certainly going to be getting one of those systems. What do you do with the death goop that’s left over? I’ve been using a still from amazon for a while and while it DOES work, having a bomb outside the shop is less than ideal.

I’d love to talk to that seller if they indeed have another unit for sale!

I set the bag in the sun, and it cures everything in the bag, then toss it away.

That’s awesome! Would you be able to shoot me the info for that other unit you had mentioned in the first post? I’m quite interested in getting one of these things. Recycled IPA would be a perfect solution for the 1st step wash system I have currently.
