Motorcycle Parts from Tough 1500 v2

How functional is Tough 1500 v2? That’s what I wanted to find out when I asked Tommy from the sales team if I could have one of my products printed in either Black V5 or Tough1500 v2. I’m going to still test this part in Black V5 when my form 4 arrives tomorrow, but this part held up to 200+ miles today of roads and rough terrain. The top bolt in the first photo is threaded into the print itself, so I’m interested to see how that will hold up over time.

The first picture is a belt guard support bracket for an electric motorcycle (LiveWire One, formerly Harley-Davidson LiveWire). The other smaller part is essentially a mount cover, so I can’t really count that as a proper test as it’s not really under any stress, just a mounting screw to hold it in place. These are bolted to a steel positioning block which is attached to the aluminum swing arm assembly.

I will keep this part on my motorcycle until it breaks, if at all. Form4 is replacing my Prusa SL1S, which has been a great printer but I need access to better, more durable resins with a larger print bed.

This is interesting to see, but one thing that has kept me from trying to use it for motorcycle parts in the raw state, without coating it, is that most if not all of the Formlabs resins will absorb liquids to some extent over time which is not good for something that has outside use.

I’m going to experiment with coating with UV resistant finishes. I’ve been using other, cheaper resins for these parts and have not had any issues. I have customers that have been using them for about 1.5 years, no reports of any failures, although those have been painted.
