I would like to build a Formlabs spherical aquarium.
It is a sphere 18cm in diameter and I am thinking of carving a lid at the top to hold the water and close it.
I am wondering what material to choose.
Can you give me any suggestions?
After printing, I’m going to cure them with a UV light.
Thanks for reaching out! I want to make sure I fully understand your project before recommending materials.
Are you planning to 3D print the actual aquarium (like a large glass sphere or dome) or just the lid? If you could share any images or sketches, that would help me get a clearer idea of what you’re envisioning.
Also, while our resins are watertight, I wouldn’t recommend using them to print an aquarium that houses fish. Any 3D printed resins can leach chemicals over time, and they’re not food-safe or safe for holding water for fish.
If you’re thinking of making something for aquarium use, I would recommend printing, molding, and casting in a clear polyurethane for a project like this. In that case, the actual print can be done in any General Purpose Resin.
If you’re looking for a material to create a clear sphere that can hold water, Clear Resin V5 could work for your needs, as it provides good optical clarity. However, keep in mind that our resins are not specifically designed for prolonged water and radiation exposure, so over time, they may potentially degrade or develop microcracks when exposed to liquid, especially in a radiation environment.
Since this is for a water phantom, if the structure isn’t housing any living organisms or requiring long-term durability in water, Clear Resin might still be a viable option that lets you see what’s going on inside. Just be sure to thoroughly post-cure the parts to ensure maximum stability.
