The New "Bags" of Powder

No need to develop anything, just download any similar to these scale it, use it and enjoy.

The bags are very similar, with this you can pour the powder to a bottle and keep using the ecosystem as always, or use a funnel to put it directly to the sift.

OK, so filling the sift with the bags is no fun lol. I did similar to what leadnav suggested and placed the bag beside the grate and cut a circular hole toward the bottom. I noticed a lot of powder going into the hepa filter so I tilted the bag so the hole was up against the grate. That worked well until the hopper filled, then I had to transfer it to a jug. I put the jug in the chamber bay and cut a corner off the top of the bag (you have to cut again where the corners are bonded to themselves so the powder will flow). Id say about 2kg went into the jug, and a bunch sucked into the hepa filter in the process. This would have gone better if the sift could take the full 10kg, seems like an odd oversight!

It is definitely not optimal.

The jugs were so perfect with a clean process that eliminated any possibility of contamination making its way into the fresh powder hopper. Super easy and didn’t have to think about it but now with these bags it definitely adds time and effort into being extra careful not too waste powder, let any dust or contamination get into the mix and it definitely adds to the dust in the air/shop.

But hey… I bet it increased overall Formlabs profit per kilo at least a dollar or two! Haha

I’m not fan of the bags definitely. Less of the increased amount to order from 6kg to 10 kg even if its “cheaper” it was way cheaper to buy only 6 kg vs buying 10 now.

But leaving that aside you can fill the jug very easy with the bag clip for coffee, you just need that, a big funnel or you could print one I was only able to receive the last remaining jugs (2) with my last year order the rest is bags and I’ve had not that many issues transfering powder to the jugs and then to the sift, you transfer 2 jugs completely to the sift (6kg) and trasfer the rest 4 to the very same 2 jugs and you are done.

This is my setup, if you want zero dust just connect either a hose or print a duct to avoid dust flying around.

That’s horrible if you have to clamp the bag down just to make sure the fine particles don’t waft around. That’s a big fail in in the design of the bag in my opinion. Clearly the jugs were better and if Formlabs was going to switch to bags to save money they should at least make it less of a hazard to deal with. :expressionless_face:

Yeah, thankfully the bags are not available with Nylon 12GF according to our reps. Im hoping it stays that way.

Yup it’s horrible but it worked, haven’t got the time to fix it and make it beautiful but it proves the design is possible I was thinking of some clips instead of the clamp for the good and final design. The bad is definitely a fail but can be fixed quickly, easy and cheaply.

You mentioned the keyword “safety” this bag is everything except safe, I wonder what is happening with NIOSH audits.

So not only are we beta testers for a lot of firmware releases… somehow Formlabs has convinced us to join its manufacturing assembly line by “putting the powder back into jugs”…

Sorry but the fact you are going through all that to literally put the powder “back into jugs” is a little ridiculous!

You are absolutely right. Formlabs has cut costs and also increased the price of bags per kilogram of material in our country. It is a mockery.

It takes 10 min to fill the jugs, 5 to prepare the bag for transfer. And for me it hasn’t been a hell to use them, my only complaint is that is more expensive and quite not practical however I found a solution for the hardware beta release :v

Beta release?

Meaning the bags, was I too generous with beta?

It seems like the bag quality has taken a step backward. I just received 50kg of powder and noticed the bag material and design have changed slightly. When I opened the box, the bag was completely covered in powder.

On closer inspection, there are a number of small holes in the bag that are allowing powder to escape and create quite a mess. Hopefully, the rest of the shipment is in better shape.

I’m also unsure about the purpose of the new “spout” design—it extends so far into the bag that it doesn’t really seem to help powder flow out effectively. It’s possible I’m cutting it incorrectly, but I haven’t found a way to make it work better.

A support video from Formlabs showing the recommended way to pour powder into the hopper would be really helpful!

I got an idea…6kg “jugs” that have a perfect pour spout meant for the Sift…zero chance of mess, contamination entering the system nor unhealthy dust into the air filling our work space and lungs…similar to what all the rest of the powder comes in…

Id have no problem with the bags if the sift could take the full 10kg.

Isn’t it conceivable to make an extension to the hopper that bolts to where the new grate/door attaches? I’m not in front of the sift right now to look at this, but this seems a potential solution.

Thank you all so much for sharing your feedback on the bags. We’re sorry of your frustrations. @jmasterson , you’re definitely experiencing a quality issue that shouldn’t be happening. We’ve alerted our associated teammates responsible on production and product. Thanks again for letting us know and we’ll work hard to correct this.

Hi @jmasterson this is Austin from the Formlabs Product Integrity team. We take powder leakage very seriously, so if you can provide the following information, we will relay it to our supplier and ensure that corrective actions are taken:

  • Powder lot number (should be on the box label)
  • Shipping region
  • Order number (if you have it)

We appreciate this feedback, and your frustration with pouting the powder into the Sift hopper is well noted. We are working on some improvements to this workflow as a result of comments like this. Thanks!

Hi @AustinMThomas and @verdugod, thanks for looking into this. It’s great to see Formlabs actively responding to customer feedback, and I appreciate hearing that improvements are on the way. I think the frustration stems from the fact that the jugs really felt like a perfect solution—but I’m confident there’s a middle ground that can reduce both packaging and environmental impact while still keeping the user experience positive.

Batch #: 952940
Shipping Region: Northeast USA (Maine)

I don’t have the order number on hand, but feel free to reach out if you need it—I’d be happy to track it down.

You just found the perfect solution. I believe it will catch on. This forum is monitored by formlabs and I believe we will see a change in this form soon
