Alert for Not Enough Resin to Finish

When printing a large volume part on the 4L I have on multiple occasions showed up to the office with the dreaded “there may not be enough resin to finish” alert. When I hit ignore (because there is clearly enough to finish, or I added more) it will raise and without fail then give me a “mixer detected debris” and automatically abort the print. This of course is inconvenient not only because of the lost time but also the loss of ~$300 worth of material (tough 1000 v2). I think a pause state that would be more effective is to have the part raise and release from the bed and then pause. I think doing this would avoid have any debris stuck due to the prolong contact with the bottom of the tank. Side note, the ability to resume from the last layer printed would also be fantastic.

Hello @JFort8, thank you for sharing your issue! Could you please specify what exactly is happening to cause the print to fail, i.e. what is causing the debris error? Usually, you should be able to continue your print after skipping the “low resin” warning (provided the resin left in the tank is indeed sufficient).

Hello,

After a little testing, I believe I may have identified the issue.

Previously, when I saw the alert, I could also see that the tank still appeared to have enough material to continue in the immediate future, so I would select Ignore and proceed. My intention was to replace the cartridges with new ones right after clearing the warnings.

What I noticed was that after doing this, the print would rise, the mixer would detect debris, and the printer would abort. After the debris-detected alert, I would gently check whether the last layer had stuck to the tank, but I never found anything.

I have since intentionally reproduced this error, and if I swap out the cartridges before touching the print, the job succeeds each time.

Could this be a bug, or just bad luck? I am not sure, but I found it interesting that the system would report debris in this situation.

I have recently raised a support ticket for a related issue, whereby the ignore button does not actually ignore. If you’re printing with an empty cartridge, with sufficient (but only just) resin in the tank to complete the job, sometimes the print will start, sometimes it will prompt you to ignore the low resin warning.

Every time this warning pops up, if you click ignore - the machine does not ignore, and instead proceeds to attempt to fill the tank (and fails after 30 mins or so due to empty cartridge). You can try over and over again, and presumably if you get lucky that the noise on the ultrasonic level sensor exceeds some threshold, the print will start and finish just fine.

I understand the warning, makes perfect sense - but having an ignore button that doesn’t actually ignore anything doesn’t make any sense. @Sophia_M I will DM you the case number in case it is of help.

Hello @jwilo, I think there might be a slight misunderstanding about the “not enough resin” warning and the option to ignore: Ignoring this warning simply means proceeding with the print instead of aborting it, but it does not mean that the printer should stop trying to fill the tank. In many cases, this warning will be displayed even when there is still resin in the cartridge - e.g. if the cartridge contains 200ml, but the print job requires 300ml. Also, the most frequent scenario for this warning is that the cartridge is replaced with a full cartridge.
I hope this clarifies why continuing to dispense resin from the cartridge is the expected and desired behaviour after ignoring the “not enough resin” warning. The printing process should continue after tapping “Ignore”, even if the cartridge is empty.

Hi @Sophia_M - I agree with everything you say.

Especially the last part “The printing process should continue after tapping “Ignore”, even if the cartridge is empty.”.

This is exactly why we raised a support ticket. We had an empty cartridge, with no more in stock, and plenty in the resin tank. We were trying to print a 4mL part, and every time when we pressed “Ignore”, the machine would just sit there trying to fill the tank, and never start the print.

We aborted and tried again, maybe 5 or 6 times over - eventually on the last attempt it happily started the print.

So I absolutely agree with your description of the intended behaviour, but it does not match actual behaviour, at least on Form 4, with 1.15.1-2853 firmware.

Posted about the exact issue 8 days ago as well. Got some user workarounds from @smerrett, but apart from which there was not much of official support.

I have also posted in the What features do you want to see in PreForm in 2026? - #64 by Ashwini for a user-controlled override option for the low-resin warning that would allow operators to decide for themselves whether to proceed with a print based on their own risk assessment. If a print fails due to insufficient resin, the responsibility would rest with the user, but it would provide greater flexibility in managing material utilization.

Hoping to see this come to realization! In the meanwhile it would be worthwhile to check out the workaround by @smerrett.
