I´m planning to use Durable resin in my Form4 to manufacture some kind of easy clamping mechanism. During the clamping, the part will be under a small constant mechanical load. Should I expect creep and so a reduction of the mechanical tension?
It would depend on the part geometry and the load, but Durable Resin is more susceptible to creep than some other stiffer engineering resins. Depending on the part geometry, I would suggest Tough 1500, Tough 2000, or if the part is really chunky, Rigid 4K or Rigid 10K. If you’re able to share images of the part with rough dimensions and a range of the expected load, I can narrow down some options for you.
Hi Henry,
Many thanks for your prompt response. Please, find a quick sketch. The red part (clip made out of Durable resin) once assembled should create a small force over the blue part. From design perspective I could include a reinforcement on top of the red part to minimize creep … but that could compromise usability (making clip/unclip not very friendly).

Thanks for the sketch! For parts that thin, you may run into some creep issues, depending on how significant the load is. I would suggest Tough 1500 or Tough 2000 for that part.
Thanks a lot for your suggestion. Btw … any data available in terms of creep to compare them ?(respect Durable)

Unfortunately, we do not have any published testing data for creep at the moment.
I see … I totally recommend to internally work in that direction and be able in a near future to provide this kind of info (essential in some applications from a design perspective)

I will pass on that feedback to our material team, thanks!
My experience with Durable or any of the Tough resins is that they will definitely creep under load (ever more so if they are under load with higher than ambient temperatures).
This also depends on how thick the parts are…but I’ve experienced issues in the past where I’ve packed some Tough 2000 parts too tightly in a box and when they arrived to their destination they had warped a bit from creep. This was a fairly large, thin walled part though…but just an example.
Thanks a lot for your contribution. Really informative.
