Powder Bag Demonstration

I figured out the bags… it all makes sense now. In the meantime.. I’m gonna try and help this stupid idea.. I mean you make a mess TWICE because it can’t hold that much powder. It’s a damn shame this happened and yes they do provide a nice bulk discount, but still obviously not fully tested or we would have a perfect solution to prevent this offloading mess.. at least provide a new filter and vacuum bag as the filling dust is horrendous. BTW.. be very very careful with the bags and prepare for anything.. I found a piece of bag plastic in my flipper, killed a job. Please give us the jugs as an option at least Formlabs.

#edouardh is spot on with his request. We need help with this incompatible bag situation.

I also had a piece of bag seize up my Sift as it made is way into the Fresh hopper on the Sift and jammed in the cartridge dosing wheel. Took me awhile to figure out and was not sure how or where a piece of bag even came from. Had to pull the front of the Sift off to find/figure it out.

Most likely it was from cutting the corner of the “pleated” bag….whoever designed this bag must have been a huge fan of “Origami”

I no longer try to cut the corner of the bag, which would be the logical pour point, and now I just kinda “stab” the middle top/side….which instead just makes it a complete mess to pour…

Hopefully…they either go back to jugs or….have someone design a bag that isn’t “mentally challenged”…

So 20 days have passed no video on the horizon, and another bag is being opened and creating a huge mess as I write this.

Is true.. I’m drawing a funnel to go back into the round plate that will use an old sift screen.. I know we all have an old one laying around. Just got to finish it up and make it fit in the build chamber. Split part of course.

yep.. made it to my flipper.. twice now.. Damn these trash bags..

I’d love to see what you come up with if you’re willing to share. I was just about to tackle designing something like that myself.

So I have compromised and have a split design that fits the chamber.. have a few lego snaps to add on the joint and then after a big print job, I’ll get it done and tested. Will share, cause I hope it is awesome. Have I told you I hate these Trash Bags and there GOTCHA plastic trash litter?

im kicking around a design but someone else should feel free to run with this idea since the bag of material i get from ALM isnt even sealed, just zip tied.

I was thinking of 3d printing a device that i can insert into a hole i cut into a powder bag that functions as a secure pour spout with a cap for storage.

Was just thinking about this and/or coming up with my own “jug” or can with a lid/funnel to put the powder into.

Someone posted this before with a picture of kind of what you are talking about. Go and check it out.

Unfortunately the bag materiel is not ductile enough for the device I made. It tears when inserting the device so I gave up on it.

I think I have the bag issue sorted but I haven’t done a dry run yet, maybe next week. To sum it up ill cut a baseball sized hole in the bottom and have that drain into the grate, while simultaneously doing a 100% refresh dump into the cartridge. Ill then dump that into a jug with a funnel I printed. Fingers crossed this will keep any stray powder to a bare minimum. Maybe ill vid the process.

We used to use something like this for storage of fertilizer bags, might help with at least the storage side of things, but pouring idk what the solution will be.

I suggested using a coffee style clip, it does work and if you install a curved adapter for the sift you will have zeromess, but you will end with ~2kg in the bag because the sift was never designed for 10kg, expect to have an upgraded unit in the future waaay expensive to replace the current one. A Sift+ or Sift2

It’s been 4 months and 2 weeks since the powder bag demonstration video was requested. In that time, 18 videos have been posted to the Formlabs Support YouTube channel, including 5 Fuse videos in the last month — which is great to see.

When the Support channel launched, the message was that videos would be guided by user needs:

“Our ask for the Forum Community: What learning methods do you prefer for troubleshooting your issues? What topics would you like us to cover in future videos? Please share your feedback! What works for you, what doesn’t– I’m eager to hear your thoughts so that I can make better videos that work for you.”

From what I’ve seen, the powder bag demonstration is one of the few specifically requested videos on this forum. Could someone share what’s involved in deciding which videos get produced, and if this one is still planned for the near future?

Hi @jmasterson, thank you following up. Our support team has recently been putting more resources into support videos lately because of the positive feedback, but we’re still a small team with a long list of high priority requests to work through. The powder bag demonstrations are still on our queue and haven’t been forgotten. We also want to make sure we’re not just rushing through making these resources just to check a box, but in the meantime, your feedback is helpful, and we’re constantly internally evaluating what to prioritize. Thanks for your patience, and please keep sharing what’s helpful so we can keep improving the experience.

Thanks for the update @henryqiu. I completely understand the limits of what a small team can accomplish, and I know it’s impossible to satisfy everyone. My frustration is that the internal priority evaluation doesn’t seem to be effectively reflecting this community’s needs, and I suspect many others would share that sentiment.

For what it’s worth, I don’t enjoy pestering the FL employees active here on the forum, and I’ve had nothing but positive interactions with you and others. This request just feels especially important since it’s tied to a significant workflow change for Fuse users.

A rough ETA would be incredibly helpful. I think many of us are looking forward to it because it’ll help us adjust our processes.

Probably the video takes this long because they can’t get it right without making a huge mess. Now they just keep filming until they get an acceptable take.

that would be great except the fuse videos are repetitive. that info is already available.
Seems like they are picking low hanging fruit instead of the unpleasant subject the community requests.

I honestly dont expect to see a video on handling bags of powder because it will not actual solve anything. The switch to bags was obviously not considered during the sift design stage. You guys made the switch to save a few pennies (and dont try to claim that it was to reduce landfill waste since the jugs can be reused and the bags effectively cannot) without passing those savings onto the customers and leaving the customers to develop their own solutions.

I dont expect to see people leaving this thread alone though. you gave yourself this black eye and future customers should know what to expect.

I wish i had done more due diligence into the company before buying a fuse 1+

+1 for sure on all of this.

They are saving more than pennies, pa 12 is available for as low as $35 USD per kg (20KG MOQ) , you can imagine the huge profit.
