Happy to help, Stephen. For rings specifically, I found that it’s best to orient then standing up, and to put a thick support (or a few side by side) at the bottom of the shank. And then you can use thinner supports to support any overhangs you might have in your ring. You also get the best detail this way, because if you tilt the ring, you will loose some detail on the support side.

To help with support placement, I do use the PreForm as a reference. So I auto-generate the supports to see where the overhangs and red-shaded areas are, if any. Then I manually place supports in those areas.

Hey Monger, good suggestion regarding the b9 software, even though it may not come across as polished as PreForm it has some very good features and the rendering is very smooth indeed. Still getting the hand of adding supports manually.

Similar results to mine. Not good. Unless you are going for that antiqued, eroded look. 😉

I think it is a waste of a print, casting fee and material to try casting this resin, better of molding, wax injecting and then casting…I reckon.

It’s been interesting following this thread and admiral results Monger on the hybrid resin has anyone considered ‘playing’ with the resins available here.

They promised to send me some samples for testing but never did. Since they are in Europe, I’m assuming they are looking for someone more local with a Form1 to run some tests. They are also working on a castable resin but still not word to when it will be available.

I’m still waiting for my Form1 but managed to get some sample prints (from a friend with a Form1) done in the red Spot-E resin. The print quality wasn’t that good but there was a problem with their resin tray. The samples were soft and rubbery like they describe but unfortunately the burnout test left some brown residue, see picture. Hopefully we can get a sample of the castable resin soon.

red oxide is primarily iron any pigment in the resin is trouble

I think the ash problems are silicates resin filler used as thickener I will verify this week

I am looking for fine details without the need for casting as I want to use the Form1 for model making (still waiting for my Form1 btw…). Is there a difference with using clear Form1 resin in the mix instead of the grey one?

I have not tried clear and b9 cherry, but you can give it a go if you like.

I have tried the clear with the b9 red resin and you can see the results about half way down in the following thread

For me since the grey by itself is much sharper than the clear resin, I imaging even in the mix, the grey would be much better.

Big thank you to you - I’ll settle with grey for now. Once I receive my printer I will try to optain some B9 resin. Time will tell.

I hope we will be testing a castable resin soon

if not the Project 1200 comes out in Jan.

@Stephen - have no reason to try it at the moment. It seems like the same as the grey and clear resin. Hopefully we don’t have to wait too long for a castable resin from Form Labs.

@Kevin - I am hoping for a castable resin, but easily castable, unlike the ridiculous Asiga resins and the Envisiontec resins. I don’t want to send my prints to a specialty casting house, or spray paint them with something before casting and hoping it will come out perfect.

Monger

You mentioned that the problem with the B9 resin is that the pigments settle after a few hours. Do you think it would help if one design small flanges at an angle and fix them to the inside of the resin tray along the sides. This could possibly stir the resin with each peel action.

After several test now, I think part of the problem is that the resin does not melt…

it stays solid and just starts to burn…wax on the other hand melt out of the mold only leaving small amounts in the mold to cause problems

a resin that melts well might be the ticket
